Ok, soooo what is this stuff with the weird name? When I decided to go vegan and started doing research on meat alternatives, I ran across a recipe for seitan. I was like “ what is this is stuff and is it even good for me?
Wheat meat…..the other meat!
What is seitan exactly? Well, seitan is a delicious meat substitute made from vital wheat gluten, the main protein of wheat. You can add liquid and seasonings, and depending on how you cook it, it can take the place of any meat you want. My preferred method of cooking is steaming, but there’s plenty of other ways to cook it.
But where do you get your protein (insert eye roll emoji here)
Seitan has just as much protein as beef (containing 16 grams of protein per 100-gram serving. That’s 25% of your recommended daily intake.
And when you compare it to tofu, seitan contains 40% more protein per serving!
And let’s talk about saturated fat. Seitan has zero! That’s right, zero saturated fat and zero cholesterol. We can’t say the same for beef. Sorry, not sorry.
If you are new to the world of seitan, I highly recommend trying it. I use it in so many recipes and it has become a staple in my household! If you are looking for ideas on how to use it in a recipe, check out our recipe videos. They are tried by my family and tested in my kitchen.
